A Writer's Reflection: On Writing the Poem "Burden"

February 23, 2016

Ever since I learned how to read, I have been obsessed with books. When I was in middle school, I realized I was the only person in my classes that read for fun, I knew what I wanted to do as a career. I wanted to read books all day and eventually write my own that would become a best seller. I enjoy writing poems as well as short stories when I have the time, and I mostly write short stories that are based on dreams that I have. I knew that in order for this dream to come true, I would have sharpen my skills as an editor, and work on my skills when it comes to reading different stories coming from college students.

Before writing this poem, I thought of angels. Angels have always been popular in my family, and I have seen my mother and many others in my family express their feelings about them. Every Christmas, my family takes out a box of angels, and scatter the angels around the house. My mother believes that they are good luck and that they also protect us. I like to think of angles as guardians of humankind and if we were ever in any danger, I believe they wouldn’t hesitate to fall down to earth and help us.

When writing this poem, I tried to put myself in the position of someone who had to choose between saving themselves or others and an angel came to my mind right away. I have always thought of angels to be guardians for everyone, and I believe whenever something wonderful happens, they are in our presence. This angel chose to fall to earth and help humankind, and abandon the fear of failing like the other angels who are afraid to try. I also like to believe that people can have the courage to help and aid others. Also, not think to that it would be a burden to do so and that is how I came up with the name for this poem.

Burden

Am I strong enough?

To move mountains, streams, or dreams?

Can my wings inspire me to leave?

To leave lost faith behind and create hope?

Or will my interference become a burden?

For those trying to forget

Shame, Misery, Regret

But a chain can only start with one

To hold the rest and lead the way

And prove that darkness can never stray

The hearts of those that ache for change
