Flaws of Beauty

Spoiler Alert- Everything is perfect…right?

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings. You’d think a movie over two and a half hours would get tedious and boring, but I’m here to tell you that’s not the case. The basis of this movie: a war among men and mythical creatures in a must-see action-packed film. There are battles, magic, and creatures that don’t exist outside of our fantasies (orcs, elves, hobbits, wizards). Gandalf, for God’s sake. Who doesn’t love Gandalf? He’s an awesome wizard with a long staff and a long white beard! He speaks in riddles and it’s very annoying, but he’s still cool because it’s Gandalf. "One ring to rule them all. One ring to find them. One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them" (Jackson). That’s nice and all, but he could’ve just said ‘this ring is bad and it needs to be destroyed’. But, I digress. We’re all entitled to poetic license. Gandalf is the Dumbledore of Lord of the Rings.

On Rivendell, Bilbo Baggins states, "time doesn't seem to pass here: it just is. A remarkable place altogether" (Tolkien). This quote from the book follows its way into the film, with the lovely green valleys, the sunlight that never seems to fade, the pretty waters, and the gorgeous elven folk. Sure, it may be some peaceful, Shangri-La setting where time never passes, but when put into film, it ruins the mystery behind what our imagination comes up with. And I have a very vivid imagination.

This film has been with me since childhood, so it’s very nostalgic for me. It’s hard to find many flaws with a movie I grew up watching so religiously. But there’s always been a part of me that likes to complain about every little thing, even things I love and cherish. Watch the film for yourself if you haven’t, and give your own opinions to anyone who is willing to listen. Question if there is a such thing as ‘too beautiful’. Question if there is such thing as too perfect. Ask yourself if those questions apply outside of the film. Or just watch the film for your own enjoyment. You won’t be disappointed.
